Savoring Summer

Savoring Summer

Do you ever feel like after July 4th, summer has come and gone? Now that August is upon us, we all want to savor every bit of sunshine, heat and outdoor fun. Here are some ideas for making the most of the remainder of the season, including a few returning summer favorites.

Fun is Fair Game

Music, food, animals, shopping and of course, cream puffs are just some of the attractions at the annual West Allis extravaganza. After a year off, the Wisconsin State Fair is back and better than ever with top music acts, great food and oh, have we mentioned cream puffs? When it comes to music, the Wisconsin State Fair Main Stage features headliners including Chris and Sara Evans, Billy Idol and the Foxies, Boyz II Men with Ginuwine, The Beach Boys, and Hank Williams Jr. with Alex Miller to name a few. Don’t forget to check out the free stages where a variety of performers get their moment in the spotlight. Pet farm animals in the Agriculture Exhibit, peruse the thousands of goods at the Expo Center, and snack on award winning food. Don’t miss this year’s Grand Prize Sporkie winner, The Glazy Boy, where pork loin, cheese and toppings are sandwiched between two Grebe’s glazed donuts. YUM!

Music to Our Ears

It might be two months late but it will be every bit as spectacular when the sounds of Summerfest hit the lakefront in September. Whether you love edgy comedy (Dave Chappelle 9/11), classic rock (Guns ‘N Roses 9/18) the princes and princess of pop (Jonas Brothers 9/8, Miley Cyrus 9/17), rap goddess, (Megan Thee Stallion 9/16) country royalty (Luke Bryan 9/2, Kelsey Ballerini 9/8) and tons more, Summerfest has music for everyone. Don’t forget to check out up and coming bands from near and far that take to side stages and grab your favorite deep-fried classics like fried eggplant and of course, cheese curds.

Rainbow Summer

The Marcus Center brings back their celebration of music and art with a series of professional outdoor concerts. Seating choices include individual seats in the “bowl” or in 5-person reserved pods. The line-up features Billy and the Downliners 8/19, the Milwaukee Police Band 8/22 and Klass & The Student Body 8/26. Click on the website for ticket information.

Concrete Canvas

Ever see those concrete barriers around downtown and think they were kind of, well, ugly? Think again. The barriers around the Water Street and Kilbourn intersection have become original works of art created by local artists. Plan to walk around and view them all before heading to one of the Rainbow Summer concerts or just head over there for a leisurely stroll around the colorful block on a lazy summer afternoon.
