Fun at the Fair!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…no, not the holidays, it’s time for the Wisconsin State Fair! The 10 amazing days when the State Fair Grounds are put to the best possible use hosting a wide variety of headlining music acts, a building full of Wisconsin farm families and their award-winning animals, local artists and artisans selling their original creations and so much more. There is truly something for everyone at the fair and every day is a little bit different. You can plan your visit using this comprehensive Daily Schedule.

For some fairgoers, it’s all about the food. Anything and everything on a stick might be an underlying theme but don’t miss the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s favorites, also known as Sporkie Award Finalists. The list includes Albanese Road House fried spinach lasagna bites, a s’mores beer float from Slim McGinn’s Irish Pub, deep fried turducken (turkey, duck and chicken) on a stick from Water Street Brewery and french onion soup on a stick from Slim’s PBR Park. Every year the fair features interesting, sometimes delicious and sometimes rather strange new food. Ever wanted to try ants on a stick? Now’s your chance. This dish definitely falls into the strange category and for some, that means stay away, but if it sparks your interest, go for it! A little less adventurous when it comes to food? Try a bacon, jam, brie burger or a beerana foster shake, a combination of bananas foster and beer.

If there was a State Fair Food staple it would have to be the big, beautiful and full of fluffiness cream puffs. It seems like there’s a Wisconsin state law, or maybe it’s the unwritten 11th commandment: “Thou shalt not visit the Wisconsin State Fair without trying a cream puff.” This sweet treat has its own building and for good reason, the Cream Puff Pavilion is a mainstay and a must-see at the State Fair.

After all that eating, walk through the State Fair Grounds and make your way to the Main Stage for your favorite music groups including country artists like Montgomery Gentry and Cole Swindell, Motown hit makers, the Temptations and the Four Tops, and classic rock icon Alice Cooper. Each day brings a different headliner and new acts and activities throughout the fair so it’s a good idea to plan ahead. Use this Shepherd Express Guide to help you plan a great day at the fair by picking the days/times and attractions you want to see.
